Toast Across America fundraiser. Cigar charities, quite a good number of cigar brands run or support a charity program. And there are a few distributors that either support or started charities as well. They are giving back to the community. Some are open about it, raising awareness while trying to raise funds. Others do it on the low as they are afraid it will be seen as marketing.
Ministry of Cigars feels that all the actions of the factories should be highlighted. The cigar industry needs positive stories, and we need to get the word out to the general public and politicians that there is no other industry that gives back to the community as much as the cigar industry does.
Toast across America
Technically Toast across America isn’t a separate charity. It is a fundraiser for the Cigar Family Charitable Foundation. Two cigars to change the world. This foundation is the brainchild of Arturo Fuente and J.C. Newman. So it’s no surprise that both companies join forces for the annual Toast across America fundraiser. But if a fundraiser raises over $6 million it deserves a topic of its own.
To raise more money for the projects of the Cigar Family Charitable Foundation, the Fuente and Newman families had to come up with new ideas. And almost twenty years ago they came up with a concept that would bring in millions over the next decades. Millions to bring clean water, food, education, and healthcare to many poor families in the Dominican Republic.
Their idea was to release an annual sampler with two cigars. Two unique cigars that are not part of any regular production. Not a special blend, but a special size. One J.C. Newman cigar and one Arturo Fuente cigar. Each year a limited amount of boxes is available to retailers in the United States. The exact number of packs is never disclosed, but by 2011 there were about 8000 packs with numbers growing every year.
How does it work?
Arturo Fuente and J.C. Newman donate cigars to benefit the Cigar Family Charitable Foundation by selling the packs to retailer for $50 per pack. 100% of the collected funds are a donation to the charity organisation to help with education, healthcare, food, water, and other humanity needs.
Most states offer tax discounts for charitable items, but not all. That’s why in some states the cigars are subject to tobacco tax and sales tax. In these cases, cigars are sold over the fixed price but still without a profit to the retailers. So if you happen to run into a pack of Toast across America cigars realize that your purchase goes directly to a good cause.
In 2019, Cigar Journal’s Cigar Award for a charitable foundation was awarded to Toast across America. A well-deserved award for a fine fundraiser.
