Oliva introduces QR codes for the Serie V Melanio. Ever since the Belgian cigar manufacturer J. Cortes acquired Oliva Cigars in 2016, Oliva improved. The VanderMarliere family, owners of J. Cortes, didn’t change anything with the blends. The portfolio remained the same. But on the background, big changes are taking place. Changes that make Oliva Cigar one of the frontrunners in embracing modern technologies. It makes them stand out in a very traditional industry.

In the last few years, the Oliva cigar factory was renovated. A second factory is opened. Oliva also hosted online, virtual, tours of the new facilities, something new for the cigar industry. When the covid-19 pandemic hit, Oliva came up with inventive ways to support its distributors in specific markets with digital pairings. J. Cortes and Oliva aren’t afraid to innovate. And that leads to QR codes on each new box of Oliva Serie V Melanio.

Ministry of Cigars - Oliva introduces QR codes for the Serie V Melanio

Detailed information

When you scan the QR code on your box of Oliva Serie V Melanio cigars, you will get detailed background information about that particular cigar. The location of the factory where the cigar was rolled. The tobacco that was used for that cigar. And on top of that, the bonchero and rolero are identified as well. Oliva, like many other manufacturers, works with teams. In a team, the bonchero bunches the wrapper and applies the binder. The rolero finishes the cigar by applying the wrapper. Since bunching requires strong hands and wrapping requires delicacy, teams are often male and female. With the man being the bonchero and the woman being the rolero.

Videos about the factories are also included in the QR code. “People like to know from what farm their food is coming; where their wallet and T-shirt has been made and who finished the table they just bought… We are happy to offer as the first ones in the industry a similar experience for the cigar smoker,” said Oliva CEO Cory Bappert. This innovation, the only one of its kind in the cigar world, perfectly matches the Oliva concept. Frederik Vandermarliere adds, “A cigar isn’t just for smoking, it’s about pure enjoyment too. With this innovation, we want to give our cigar connoisseurs an added experience.”
