Joya de Nicaragua is entering Belgium. It is weird that a cigar brand that has been active in Europe longer than most, if not all, new world cigars never had a distributor in Belgium. Belgium might be one of the smallest countries in Europe, with a population of about 11 million people yet the cigar sales are higher in total numbers than the much larger neighbor to the north, The Netherlands. But that is about to change.
A new player in the game, Media Rueda just received their first order from the oldest cigar factory in Nicaragua. Joya de Nicaragua is the third brand in their portfolio, next to Black Label Trading Company and Black Studio Works. The first order exists of a limited number of lines and vitolas to introduce Joya de Nicaragua to the market.
The cigars that are available are the Joya de Nicaragua Clasico in the vitolas Churchill, Seleccion B, Toro, and Robusto. It is the only cigar that ever received recognition as the nation’s official cigar. Mild to medium with Nicaraguan tobacco as filler and binder. The wrapper is Ecuadorian Connecticut.
The two-tone Joya Cabinetta is coming in a Robusto and Toro size. This is also a mild cigar with a unique appearance. The foot of the cigar is covered with a light Ecuadorian Connecticut and the tip is a dark Nicaraguan Criollo leaf.
From the color series, Media Rueda is introducing the Joya Silver. This cigar is made from Nicaraguan filler with a Mexican San Andres binder. The wrapper is Ecuadorian Habano. This results in a medium-bodied cigar. The robusto and Toro are available in Belgium
The Obras Maestras series is the top-of-the-line from Joya de Nicaragua. Only three blends are part of this select club. And all three are coming to Belgium as well.
The Diadema and El General from the Cinco Decadas for example. The Diadema was Ministry of Cigars #1 cigar of 2019. The blend is a company secret and the cigar was released to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Joya de Nicaragua.
Five years earlier, Joya de Nicaragua also released a birthday cigar, Cuatro Cinco. At first as a limited edition but after a little tweak the cigar became regular production. The Toro from this line is available in Belgium
Joya de Nicaragua is also the factory that makes the official diplomatic cigar for the Nicaraguan government. A smooth cigar with a Connecticut Shade wrapper from Ecuador over Nicaraguan tobacco. The 6⅞x48 Le Premier is the last of the Joya de Nicaragua cigars in this shipment.
More to come?
Pieter de Windt from Media Rueda told Ministry of Cigars that the brand new limited edition to celebrate 200 years of freedom of Central America is coming soon. And that a selection of the Joya de Nicaragua Antaño series might come to Belgium as well.
