In 1999, the Swiss author Thomas Brunnschweiler published his novel ‘Der Papst von Genf’ and introduced Gilbert de Montsalvat to the world. After reading the book, cigar distributor Raymondo Bernasconi could not shake off the character. It’s a sad story though, the main character is unable to smell or taste. But the moral of the story is, trust your own instinct and judgment.
When Bernasconi started his own cigar brand, he chooses to name it Gilbert de Montsalvat. The brand launched on April 1st, 2008, and has always incorporated the irony of the story to set the brand apart from other cigars on the market.
For the 10 year anniversary, Gilbert de Montsalvat released a limited edition. 1000 boxes of 10 cigars but also a re-release of the book and the Gilbert de Montsalvat autobiography ‘A night in Havana’ and ‘Cubanischen Sonette’ The cigars are available in one size only, 5 3/4×58.
The cigars are made on the Dominican Republic. The filler comes from Nicaragua. The binder is Dominican. The wrapper is from Ecuador. The cigar is medium bodied, medium-full flavored.
