Cigar birthdays in January. Like every month we celebrate some of the people in the cigar industry. If we miss anybody on our calendar, please let us know and we will add him or her. Here are the birthdays for January.
January 10: Jeremiah Meerapfel. One of the two brothers running the Meerapfel family business. Tobacco growers in Cameroon. Tobacco merchants with warehouses in Europe. Cigar manufacturers with several brands under their wings including La Estancia. And cigar distributors for Padron and Fuente. And with the Fuente family, they are Arturo Fuente International.
January 11: Mariska Kelch, tobacconist, cigar importer, and cigar brand owner. The second generation tobacconist launched her import and distribution company Kelch Trading. And she created El Pino Blanco with David Blanco. Reviews of the El Pino Blanco can be found here for the Maduro and here for the Corojo.
January 18: David Davtian. The president of the Armenian Cigar Association. Cigar distributor in Armenia. And owner of the Davitan cigar brand. Ministry of Cigars reviewed the Davtian Primus and Davtian Habana last year.
January 19: Conrado Plasencia. One of the many generations of Plasencia working in tobacco for the octopus that the Plasencia family has become. But octopus in a good way. As the largest grower of premium tobacco in Nicaragua and Honduras, and the owner of four cigar factories, it’s almost impossible to make cigars without having them involved.
January 19: Mac Bergson. The managing director international aka director of global affairs for Swisher International. And because of that, also the managing director international for the Nicaraguan cigars from Drew Estate. And Ministry of Cigars reviewed quite some Drew Estate in 2019, including
January 26: Bill Ives, a former Law Enforcement Officer that now makes cigars with another former LEO, Juan Cancel. And all their lines have names related to their past in law enforcement.
