CAO is bringing the Zócalo back. The cigar, part of the World Series, was a limited edition of 70.000 cigars back in 2018. Now CAO owner General Cigars is turning the CAO Zócalo into a regular production cigar.

World Series

The CAO World Series is a series of cigars that pays homage to countries or regions. It holds some of the best known CAO cigars such as the CAO America, Brazilia, Italia, Nicaragua but also the CAO Amazon Basin. The CAO Zócalo is a tribute to Mexico. Its name comes from the main square in Mexico City.

Even though none of the cigars in the CAO World Series are puros, they all use some tobacco from the country or region that is its inspiration. The same goes for the CAO Zócalo. The wrapper is a morron wrapper from the San Andres region of Mexico. The binder is from Cameroon with fillers from Nicaragua.

The blend remains the same as the original release. Yet CAO did update the packaging to fit in with the CAO World Series. All the packaging have nods to the regions they represent. The new packaging of the CAO Zócalo draws inspiration from the Mexican flag instead of the cathedral that sits at the foot of the Zócalo square.

Sizes and international release

The original release was a 6×60 CAO Zócalo Gigante. That size is returning, but now with two smaller companions. A 6×50 Toro and a 5×52 Robusto. All come in boxes of 20 cigars.

“Two years ago, we tested a blend with a wrapper from Mexico, launching Zócalo in a 6 x 60,” says Rick Rodriguez, CAO’s blender and ambassador. “The response was very positive. The only negative feedback we received was that the blend came in just one size. Our fans told us that they would definitely support Zócalo if we had more sizes to offer. Fast forward to 2021 and here we are launching Zócalo as a permanent, three-cigar line.”

The cigars, which are made at STG Esteli, are landing at American retailers soon. Other markets will have to wait a little longer for the new CAO Zócalo cigars.
